For the first Perspectives residency, Ian Carter and Nicola Kearey (Stick In The Wheel, From Here Records) have invited Olugbenga Adelekan (Metronomy, Africa Express), Jon 1st (DMC DJ Champion, Fly High Society) and Nabihah Iqbal (Ninja Tune, NTS) to explore the national collection of folk arts at the EFDSS. Looking at notions of culture, tradition, collecting, cross-pollination and fragmentation of music, to bring some fresh perspectives to Cecil Sharp House.

Olugbenga
Born in Lagos to a Kenyan mother and Nigerian father, OLUGBENGA now resides by the sea in Brighton. He has travelled the world working as a bass player and vocalist, lending his talents to groups such as Damon Albarn’s Africa Express, Paloma Faith and La Roux. He is best known for his long-standing association with Metronomy, but OLUGBENGA has also lent his talents as a remixer to the likes of Laura Marling, Janelle Monae, Mew, Alt-J, Depeche Mode and the Scissor Sisters. OLUGBENGA’s DJ skills have taken him to events and festivals across the UK and worldwide, performing in the USA, Australia, Japan, Russia, Italy, Norway and more. His debut EP Hafiza gained support from BBC 6Music from Lauren Laverne and a selection of BBC Radio 1 presenters including Rob Da Bank and Huw Stephens. The Fader, Noisey, Mixmag and UK newspapers The Metro and Independent.
Since his breakout win in the 2013 DMC World Online DJ Championships, Jon1st has quickly built a reputation as a ‘DJ’s DJ’, not only proving himself as one of the world’s most diverse turntablists but also as an in demand club DJ, selector and producer, constantly breaking new music and effortlessly blending together influences across the alternative bass music spectrum.
In addition, his interest in live performance within electronic music has seen him work with a number of artists, most notably Beardyman in his Dreamteam improvisation band and most recently Danish artist, Shield, with whom he has developed an ongoing production and live show collaborative project, which the pair have been touring extensively for 2019.
Nabihah Iqbal is a musician, producer, DJ and broadcaster from London. Her debut album, ‘Weighing of the Heart’, was released via Ninja Tunein December 2017 and has since garnered huge critical acclaim from the likes of The Guardian, Pitchfork, Dazed, The Observer, Q Magazine, BBC Radio 1 and 6Music. She is currently an artist-in-residence at London’s iconic cultural institution, Somerset House, where she is writing and recording her second album.
Nabihah has hosted a bi-weekly show on NTS Radio for over 6 years now, exploring musical traditions and cultures without boundaries. Building reputation as a DJ and tastemaker; caught the attention of the BBC and she has been one of their radio residents since June 2018, presenting shows on BBC Asian Network and BBC Radio 1. Key DJ dates include Glastonbury, Warehouse Project, Citadel Festival, Boiler Room, Worldwide Festival and Bestival.
