New series of Library Lectures

The Vaughan Williams Memorial Library is pleased to present a new series of Library Lectures for the forthcoming winter and spring season. Talks are presented by guest speakers who are specialists in their respective fields, and will cover song, music, dance, and folklore.

This season opens with the talk Along with the Raggle Taggle Gypsies-O by Keith Chandler (Tuesday 26 January 2016, 7pm), which focuses on gypsy fiddlers and their music making over the last few centuries.

Keith Chandler is best known for his published works on morris dancing and more recently for his research on gypsy fiddlers published in various articles such as, 'Probably the most widely known gipsy for many a mile around’ : the life and musical activity of Thomas Boswell, aka Thomas 'Gipsy' Lewis (1838-1910), published in Folk Music Journal (2011). Keith’s extensive research into the historical, social and economic aspects of music and dance means that we can expect a fascinating talk drawing on social history as well as an exploration of traditional music making.

Maypoles, Morris and Minuets: Restoring Old England’s Dances before the Folk Revival, by Theresa Buckland (Tuesday 22 March 2016, 7pm)

Night Visit Songs Revisited by Vic Gammon (Tuesday 26 April 2016, 7pm)
